Foundation Problems Photo Album: Replacing Brick Columns in Basement, Newburyport, MA
A resident of Newburyport, Massachusetts resides in a house constructed in the 1950s. They have brick support posts in the basement that aren't strong enough to hold up modern appliances. The homeowner contacted EFS to request a free inspection of the basement supports. Kenny Calabrese, our Design Specialist, met with the homeowner to assess the situation and suggested replacing the brick columns with our SmartJacks after walking through the basement.
Steve Dumais led our installation team in setting up temporary supports around the basement before removing the 3 brick columns. They then proceeded to install the SmartJacks, starting with creating a footing. The team chipped out a small section of concrete to install the footing below the slab. When measuring and cutting the supports, they accounted for the adjustable bracket to ensure a proper fit. Once the supports were set in the footing and secured to the beam, the team used the adjustable top to lift and provide support to the floor system.
The homeowners were delighted with the outcome of the project, and they no longer have to worry about the strength of the floor system.
