Foundation Problems Photo Album: Settling on Second Floor, Salem, MA
A homeowner in Salem, Massachusetts, had lived in their home for 50 years, and over the last 15 years, they have noticed settling on the second floor of their home. In the last 2 years, the settling has gotten worse and the homeowner decided to call EFS for a free inspection. Our Design Specialist Kenny recommended installing SmartJacks and a Supplemental Beam into the basement to permanently stabilize the floors.
Our production team began by chipping out concrete in the basement floor so the team could install our big footings. Once the concrete was removed the team then hand-dug down enough so the footing can lay flush underneath the concrete. After hand-digging the hole, the team then poured in engineered fill and then placed the big footing over the fill. Next, the team installed the SmartJacks into the big footings and then attached the top bracket. Once the top brackets were installed, the team then connected the Supplemental Beam which spanned over 2 or more SmartJacks. After everything was installed the team covered the footing with concrete to eliminate any tripping hazards.
Basement Before SmartJacks
This area of the basement was where most of the sagging was occurring.
Concrete Chipped
The team chipped out concrete large enough for us to install the big footings.
Engineered Fill Installed
The team used Engineered Fill to prevent the SmartJack from shifting after it was installed.
SmartJacks and Supplemental Beam Installed
The team installed the SmartJacks and Supplemental Beam in the basement.
Concrete Over Footings
After the SmartJacks were all set up the team then mixed concrete and poured it over the footings to eliminate any tripping hazard and to lock them in place.
