Foundation Problems Photo Album: Wooden Supports Need Replacing, West Newton, MA
Megan H. recently purchased a home in West Newton, Massachusetts. While walking through her prepurchase inspection she noticed some of the wooden supports in the basement looked like they could be replaced. She decided to call Erickson Foundation Solutions to see if they could come out and look at the supports in the basement.
Design Specialist Jason Love came to the newly purchased home and examined every support in the basement. Jason did find that the home was settling and would need new supports in the basement. He recommended to Megan the use of SmartJacks. SmartJacks will be stronger and last longer than traditional wooden supports.
Megan's home was built in the 1800s and she would like to keep the character of her home for as long as possible. She considers the horse-hair plaster one of the character items. She asked Jason if it was possible if to have the crew not lift on the support beams when replacing the old posts. Jason told her that wouldn't be a problem.
When Scott Crandall and his crew came to the home they replaced all of the old wooden support and changed them out for SmartJacks. They were able to keep Megan's wish and didn't crack any of the horse-hair plaster.

The SmartJacks need to be installed over a large footing which will provide additional support. The base of the SmartJack plates rests on 12"-16" of engineered fill that helps to evenly distribute the weight above.
