Photo Album: Floor Sagging After Lally Column Was Removed, Marblehead, MA

A homeowner in Marblehead, Massachusetts, has lived in their home for the past 50 years. About 30 years ago they removed a lally column from the basement to gain more usable space in the basement. About 30 years later the homeowner had a heart attack and was unable to go down into the basement anymore. One time they had a family member organizing things in the basement and they noticed the beam in the basement was sagging where they had removed the lally. The family member told the homeowner and the homeowner called EFS for a free inspection. Our Design Specialist Liam recommended installing two Lally Columns to stabilize the beam. Our installation team began by exposing the slab in the finished basement. Then the team chipped out a small section of concrete so they could make a footing for the lally columns. Next, the team installed rebar in the footing and poured in concrete. Once the footing was cured, the team then installed the lally columns over the footings and to the beam. After the team makes sure everything is level, they mix up some more concrete and pour it over the bottom of the lally column. After the concrete has cured the team then laid the carpet over the concrete and around the lally columns.
